Attention changed how information moves.

Understand the Transformer’s central idea, what the original experiments reported, what they did not establish, and why the architecture still matters to engineers.

The question

How can a sequence model connect information across positions without processing the sequence through a recurrent hidden state?

Vaswani and colleagues introduced the Transformer in Attention Is All You Need, first submitted in June 2017. This article explains their work and distinguishes it from the teaching examples below.

The core idea

Attention combines information from different positions with input-dependent weights. The original Transformer also includes positional information, feedforward layers, residual paths and normalization; its architecture is described in section 3 of the paper.

What the paper reports

What the evidence supports

The reported translation comparisons support the authors’ claims under the evaluated datasets and training configurations. Their parsing experiments examine an additional task. These are results reported by the original authors, not measurements performed by TheJobPoolConsultants.

What those results do not establish

Engineering interpretation

The following is an engineering exercise, not a new experimental result.

Then consider a causal decoder: with shifted target inputs, masking prevents access to future target tokens. Drawing that boundary helps distinguish available information from information a model actually uses.

If you use a Transformer through an API, this mental model can guide design questions. What material is supplied in the context? Which interactions are permitted? What happens when needed evidence is missing or truncated?
